Today my brother and I got to meet our childhood (and adulthood) hero, Joel Hodgson. I am so pleased to share that he is the absolute KINDEST person you could ever meet. The love and appreciation he has for his fans is so awesome; I could not have asked for a better meeting!
The show, “Riffing Myself”, took a stop in my hometown Tucson, AZ this evening and my brother and I were to happy to have tickets. We ended up splurging on the VIP tickets because, hey, when are we gonna have the chance to meet this guy again?
The show was GREAT and SO funny and it was really cool getting to hear from the shows creator how it all came to be. Also, how many of us get to say that we sat in a movie theater next to Tom Sevo and Crow T. Robot??
After the show we had the opportunity to ask some questions. I asked Joel: “Have you ever met any of the directors or actors from the movies you’ve riffed, and if so, were they upset?” He said he’s met quite a few and they were all great sports about it. “They know that [the movie] was something that only took three days out of their lives,” he responded with a chuckle, “they know that it’s good all in good fun and, the ones I’ve met, anyway, have all said they really enjoy the show.”
When it came time for the photos/autographs I showed Joel the “book” I made when I was in middle school (it’s only about 30-40 pages; not much of a book). I told him about how Jr. High was a tough time for me, so I would bring this book of riffs from the show with me to school and read them when I needed a good laugh; it got me through a lot, truthfully. He flipped through it and got a few good laughs out of it. “Wow! Thanks so much for showing me this, this is really great. I appreciate you bringing this,” he said.
All-in-all a very successful night and one I will be dining on for the rest of my life :)
